Concept artist
We're looking for a talented Concept Artist to join our 2D animated feature film in its early development stages. You'll work directly with the Director to visually define the world, characters, and key elements for our proof of concept, which will then inform our technical aspects of our workflow (predominantly Blender/Greasepencil). This is a unique opportunity to shape the foundational look and feel of an exciting animated project.
Responsibilities
Collaborate closely with the Director to develop and refine the visual style and aesthetic of the film.
Design and deliver comprehensive character designs (including expressions, poses, and turnarounds) that capture personality and fit the film's tone.
Create detailed environmental designs for key locations, establishing mood, composition, and visual storytelling.
Develop designs for essential props and vehicles, ensuring they are consistent with the overall art direction.
Produce a range of concept art, from quick ideation sketches to polished final designs, for the proof of concept phase.
Generate artwork that not only inspires but also provides clear guidance for the animation team, particularly as we establish our workflow.
Participate in visual development meetings, offering creative solutions and contributing to a collaborative artistic environment.
Adapt to feedback and iterate on designs efficiently to meet production goals.
Qualifications
Proven professional experience as a Concept Artist on animated film or series productions.
Exceptional drawing and painting skills with a strong understanding of composition, perspective, and lighting.
A particular strength in the use of colour and texture to establish mood, convey character, and define environments.
A portfolio that showcases a diverse range of character, environment, and prop designs, demonstrating versatility and an ability to convey narrative through visuals.
Strong understanding of 2D animation principles and the technical considerations of bringing designs into an animated pipeline.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to articulate artistic ideas clearly.
Proficiency in industry-standard digital painting software (e.g., Photoshop, Clip Studio Paint, Krita).
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a small, agile team.
Bonus Points
Familiarity or experience with Blender and/or Greasepencil.
Experience in a production environment using 2D animation software.
Traditional art background (e.g., life drawing, traditional painting).
